SAWA-Australia was set up in February 2004. It is dedicated to raising funds for human rights, education, nutrition, health, safety, and improving the self-esteem of the millions of Afghan women and children in Afghanistan.

SAWA is operated entirely by volunteers. All funds raise go to projects run by Afghan women's organisations OPAWC and AFCECO in Afghanistan. Projects currently supported are a Literacy Centre in Kabul, a health Centre in Farah, and scholarships for girls to undertake tertiary studies in Afghanistan.
