Child Health Research Institute

The Child Health Research Institute (CHRI) is an independent medical research institute committed to improving the health and development of children.

The Institute was founded in 1989, to carry out research in cancer, immunology, gastrointestinal development and disease, wound healing and child nutrition.

Research at CHRI revolves around three programs:-

Child Nutrition Program: The overall aim of the program is to optimise the nutritional intake of mothers and their infants whether the infants are born preterm or at term. The rationale of our research is that improvements in nutritional status will improve long term outcome of all infants and this will have beneficial effects on their quality of life and whole-of-life health care costs.

Immunology Program: is active in four major areas. Paediatric, Mucosal Immunology, Antibody Engineering and Cancer Biology. Paediatric Immunology aims to understand the infant immune system, with a view to improving the control of infectious disease in infants. Mucosal Immunology focuses on the immune system in the infant gut. Antibody Engineering uses protein engineering to develop therapeutic and diagnostic agents. In the Cancer Biology program the aim is to investigate the control of blood cell formation and function as an understanding of this is critical for development of more effective bone marrow transplantation regimes and for our understanding of leukaemia.

Tissue Repair Program: Is active in three overlapping areas of research, Molecular Mechanisms of Wound Repair, Topical Applications of Growth Factors and Enteral Applications of Growth Factors. In the Gut Development projects, we aim to understand the mechanisms by which growth factors and other bioactive molecules influence gut growth and maturation, as well as barrier and immune function. From this knowledge, new strategies will be developed to prevent or treat conditions associated with gut damage, immaturity or immune dysfunction. Particular emphasis is given to the development of new therapeutics for gastrointestinal mucositis.
