Tay aged 8 was fully sighted until 18 months ago. Now he is completely blind. He developed retinal dystrophy.

Loss of sight can happen at anytime to anyone. It is one of the most common forms of disability in Australia, with over 100,000 people in Victoria either blind or vision impaired.

Who do you turn to?

Tay's mum, contacted the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind (RVIB) and immediately a teacher was provided to attend school with Tay to help him adjust.

"Tay was beginning to enjoy reading when he lost his sight," says his mum. "I'm so pleased he is able to continue to enjoy books."

Reading is a skill most of us take for granted. We can flick through a magazine. We can immerse ourselves in a novel. We can look at ingredients on a tin of soup and we can read a menu when we go to a restaurant.

That is, of course, as long as we are not one of the thousands of Victorians who are blind or vision impaired. Braille, a language of raised dots read with the pads of the fingers, ensures that people who have lost their sight do not also lose their independence.

RVIB Braille Week, 7th - 13th October, aims to break down barriers and educate sighted people on how Braille can make a difference. During Braille Week, RVIB is conducting a number of activities designed to further people's experience of braille and understand the importance of Braille in education, employment and everyday literacy.

Your generosity in contributing to this appeal will help us teach Braille to adults and children just like Tay, allowing blind and vision impaired people the ability to participate and achieve equally in the community, employment and education.

Should you ever need our services, your donation will help us to help you.

We at Donations.com.au are proud to support and feature the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind - Braille Appeal.

We all take the 'Gift of Sight' for granted. Some of us are born without the 'Gift of Sight', some lose the 'Gift of Sight'.

But who will teach you the skills to read again - the 'Gift of Braille', the RVIB will.

You can help the RVIB now by donating online through our secure, real time facility. (See RVIB consent)
